Winter approaches, and with it comes the reminder of the importance of warmth and protection. For many families in Richmond, winter also brings about a poignant reminder of the challenges they face daily. It’s a season that calls for community unity, and a time when we all have an opportunity to make a difference.

The United Black Birth Collective (UBBC) has always believed in the sanctity of Black life, one birth at a time. Our mission doesn’t stop at ensuring safe births; it’s about fostering an environment where every Black child and family can thrive. The heart of our work lies in creating spaces that empower, uplift, and protect our community at every stage of life.

With that mission in mind, we’re excited to announce the UBBC Coat Drive.

Winter’s cold can be harsh, but the warmth of community can overcome even the most chilling winds. Through this coat drive, we aim to extend our protective arms beyond the realm of birth, reaching out to our families in Richmond who need that extra layer of warmth this season. We believe that just as every birth is a beacon of hope, every coat donated can be a symbol of love, warmth, and protection for our Black families.

Why Coats?

A coat is more than just a piece of clothing. It’s a shield against the elements, a comfort on a chilly morning walk to school, and a source of warmth during a cold evening bus ride home. For children, a snug coat can mean the difference between a joyful winter playtime and a shivering afternoon indoors. For parents, it’s the peace of mind knowing their child is warm.

But for many families in our community, buying a new coat isn’t always financially feasible. As we work to ensure the safe and empowered beginnings of Black life through birth, we also recognize the ongoing needs of our community’s families. This coat drive is a step in that direction, ensuring our Black families face winter with strength and dignity.

In the end, it’s not just about coats. It’s about embodying the essence of UBBC’s mission in every action we take. The drive aligns seamlessly with our commitment to protect and uplift Black lives in Richmond.
